This post has been edited See historySUBJECT: Encode works, build works, format works, DVD doesn't
Anyway, I have a DVD project I am working on that is bordering on Promethean (or perhaps Sysiphisian?)
I imported VHS footage via DV cam to iMovie and exported the raw video. I imported into DVDSP3, built the menus, scripts, etc., then encoded, build/formatted, etc.. Played OK in DVD Player on mounting the .img file. The thing is, the video quality was somewhat shoddy, even though I had used fairly high settings.
So I instead encoded the original file in Compressor, using a bit rate max of 9, but a lower average rate, and encoding the AIFF audio as low bitrate AC3, since the sound was not that important. Video looked great. Should have been well under the max bitrate allowed, but when I played in DVD Player, it would start the opening sequence and then hang. Hitting play/pause repeatedly advanced a few frames at a time, until it got to the next chapter marker, at which point it played fine. Skipping worked fine too, unless I skipped to the opening sequence again, when it would do the same as before, hanging after a second or so of playback. Thinking maybe it was a DVD Player issue, I burned the disk, and in an actual player, was told that there were no DVD compliant files. Hmmm…
Anyway, so I re-encoded the original file with Compressor with a lower max bitrate of 8.5, average of 6.8. Same thing. Video was still great, but the first chapter hangs in DVD Player. Burned a disk, first time in the player it produced the same results as above. On reinserting, it actually played, but the video skipped, and was pixelated.
Am I right in thinking that this is a result of again being too high a bitrate? That is my thinking but it is mediated somewhat by the fact that the bitrate I set in Compressor was not that different from the one I set in DVDSP3 that worked OK, but with less than stellar video.
Or is there something up with my Compressor settings that is making an incompatible file? Why is it hanging in DVD Player, but not simulator? If the bitrate is too high, why is DVDSP3 perfectly happy with it? Why does it play fine after the first chapter in the software player?
I am currently going back to the original file and trying an encode with DVDSP3 set with a slightly higher bitrate than the first time, to see if I can get acceptable video, but I am not convinced that will happen.
Any clue? Or suggestions on how to get acceptable video that will actually play?
