I too have purchased the HD A1 and with the few IMHO minor problems, it has performed good.
I did hook it up to a 72HM195 DLP Toshiba set and the picture quality is outstanding for HD movies and the up-converting of regular DVD's are worth it. I used the "Battle of the Bulge" for comparison and there is a marked improvement.
I had no problems with an HDMI error. I due agree that the remote layout is a problem and could use a redesign. The fan noise is very minimal. The 1080p issue could possibly be addressed by a future update.
All things said, I am happy with my purchase and would recommend this player to those who would like to ride the wave in this HD vs Blue Ray War as HD will win in the end.
My system:
Toshiba 72HM195 DLP TV
Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD Player connected by HDMI
DirectTV HD DVR connected by HDMI
Sony 1000 watt Home Theater receiver
Sony 5 Disc DVD player connected by Component
Toshiba VHS player
Speakers KLH & Sony 6.1 with 2 more connected on B for a total of 8.1
