SUBJECT: Windows XP Crashed? Here's Help
No, I have not seen Microsoft write clearly very often either. So thanks to Charlie White for providing a clear solution that can help many people.

One thing I have seen is some of the Microsoft MVPS recommend this free little utility, which can recover the registry easier and in much less time (and it works from both Safe Mode and the Recovery Console): ERUNT.

Just do a search for ERUNT, and go to Lars Hederer's home page. Under the Download section (left hand column), click either "Server 1", "Server 2", or "Server 3". Don't click the link to the name of the server following "Generously hosted by ..." or you'll have to start drilling to find it.

ERUNT is free and instructions are included. It works great for Windows XP. Let it create a startup entry, and it will back up your registry once a day, the first time you turn the PC on that day. It saves a month of back ups.

Vista users have a tougher time, because User Account Control blocks it (no kudos to MS here). Vista users need to either turn User Account Control off, manually run it, or, better yet, create and schedule a basic task to run it daily.

When you do that, enable the following settings:
-Run whether user is logged on or not
-Do not store password. The task will only have access to local resources.
-Run with highest privileges.
-Run at startup.
-The program command is:
%SystemRoot%\ERDNT\AutoBackup\#Date#
-The optional arguments are:
/noconfirmdelete /noprogresswindow
-For notebooks, disable "Start the task only if computer is on AC power."

You should include BOTH the program command line and the optional arguments (they each go on a separate line when you create the task).

So thanks again to Charlie, and thanks to Lars as well.

-Chuck
